Counting inspections - total counts vs. coverage counts

OECA has two methods for counting inspections. Most categories of inspections are counted using the total number method. That is for every inspection, each time an inspector shows credentials per se, or each time an inspection report is generated per se, an individual inspection is counted. In the OECA certification workbook this table is named "Federal Inspections/Evaluations."

The second method OECA uses to count inspections is coverage. Using the coverage method, if the same facility is inspected multiple times during one fiscal year the inspection will only count once. In the certification workbook this table is named "Federal Inspection Coverage - Select Programs."

OECA uses both methods, that is total number and coverage, for the CAA, CWA and RCRA programs. For all the other statutes, OECA only counts the total number of inspections.
