Important reminder about not entering enforcement sensitive information in the ICIS "Case Summary" Data Field

Regional Enforcement Division Directors - This email is to remind you that all data entered into the "Case Summary" data field on the Integrated Compliance Information System (ICIS) Enforcement Action data entry screen has the potential to become publicly-available whenever the case is concluded.  When a case is concluded, the case summary information in ICIS is automatically released to the public via the Enforcement and Compliance History Online (ECHO) system.  Therefore, if you do not want to release enforcement sensitive data to the public, please be sure your staff are very careful about the data they enter into the "Case Summary" data field.

Only information of a non-sensitive nature should be entered in the "Case Summary" field.  Information that EPA would want to retain as sensitive in the long-term should be entered in the "Attorney Comments" field in ICIS.  That data field is never made available to the public.  Additional clarification and guidance was included in the December 2008 release of ICIS (see attached ICIS Release 3.2 Summary).  If you have any questions about the use of ICIS data fields, please contact your Regional ICIS Contact, ICIS User Support, or Michael Mundell of my staff (mundell.michael@epa.gov, 202-564-7069).

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

John M. Dombrowski, P.E.

Acting Director

Enforcement Targeting and Data Division, OECA/OC
